Design challenge

In 2011, the video streaming application market was highly competitive, with companies like Baidu, Youku, and PPTV already dominating the space. Tencent had been offering video viewing services for three years, but only through computer browsers. With the growing trend of mobile video consumption, capturing mobile users became crucial. Our challenge was to design a distinctive video application that could stand out in the competitive market and attract mobile users.

Design language

Moods are influenced by various factors and can impact advertising and brand attitudes. When considering our design language, we had an interesting idea to align the design mood with the user scenario, specifically the context of watching movies. Through Image Boards research, we identified Skeuomorphism design as our design language. In early 2011, Skeuomorphism design was popular on iOS, although Flat design has since become mainstream. To create a relaxed and comfortable experience, we developed a simulated home theater environment using 3D-Max. The release of QQLive proved that our strategy was successful, as we gained approximately six hundred thousand users within three months.
